Trainee solicitor

Many law firms will call themselves ‘international’, but I have experienced what that can mean during the first two deals I contributed to at Baker McKenzie. Working in Corporate M&A, the team I was part of collaborated with local counsels across 40 jurisdictions, each presenting unique challenges and experiences.

The depth of market knowledge that my colleagues and the Firm had was vital, as we managed the legalities for local subsidiaries divesting from their global parent company. It was fascinating, instructive and truly international.

As a trainee, the next piece of work I contributed to was formative. Geopolitical circumstances led to a US-based client planning a large exit deal in Russia. The Firm’s role as a trusted adviser meant we needed to be commercially astute, mindful of protecting the client’s reputation and able to move at pace.

This transaction also helped me build a network within the Firm. During this time, I worked closely with Jannan Crozier, our global chair of M&A. Jannan’s mentoring had a crucial impact on me.

Her knowledge and experience was so inspiring, and she was able to make the most complex elements of the deal easy for me to understand. Being at the beginning of your career and working side by side with the most senior person in Corporate M&A; it’s experiences such as this that set Baker McKenzie apart.
