Ed Poulton

Graduate Recruitment Partner and Partner in Dispute Resolution
Studied Law and French Law at the University of East Anglia (and Lyon).

I chose to join Baker McKenzie as a Trainee in 2000. I was impressed by its international nature: no other firm has our global reach. Ultimately however, I accepted because I immediately felt at home in the open and friendly environment. Fifteen years on, I still believe that we are the world's premier global law firm in terms of quality of work, clients and people.

Complicated situations

I’ve been a partner in our London Dispute Resolution Department since 2010. Put simply, I help clients extricate themselves from difficult situations, through negotiations and, where this cannot be avoided, legal proceedings. I have a particular focus on international arbitration, for which Baker McKenzie provides the perfect footprint.

London life

Baker McKenzie is large enough to provide a huge array of opportunities (both in London and on a global scale), but small enough to remain nimble and I’ve enjoyed a wonderful blend of intellectual stimulation, diversity of work and great people. I’ve been lucky enough to live in a number of places, and to work in our Madrid and Sydney offices at various times, but I have to say, I can't think of anywhere I would rather work than London. I love its energy and diversity, and the way it has constantly re-invented itself to face new challenges over the centuries.

Making a difference

Baker McKenzie is a place where you can be yourself and don't need to conform to any stereotypes of moulds: I have been able to build wonderful relationships around the Firm, which is the best way of influencing the way we do business. And we don’t simply focus on business either. I am an active member of our Make A Difference (MAD) committee, which manages the London office's charitable giving. I’ve also been very involved with our hosting of the first ever summit on the rights of street/ homeless children around the world. It was a hugely inspiring event.
